Did you know… that Ventura’s first post office was established in 1861?
It was located at 377 E Main St and V. A. Simpson was the town’s first postmaster. Not very much mail was received at the time. In fact, records show that the postmaster was in the habit of depositing the mail in his hat and then walking around among the citizens to deliver the letters. It is noted by a historian that this “may be regarded as the first introduction of the system of letter carriers in California.”
