A Century of Family, Farming and Ventura County History
There are places in Ventura County where the past doesn’t simply live in old photographs or history books — it still grows in the fields, rustles through the orchards and gathers around the dinner table.
McCormick Home Ranch in Camarillo is one of those very special places.
Tucked among the fertile farmland of the Pleasant Valley, the historic ranch is a living piece of Ventura County agricultural history. For more than a century, the McCormick family has called this place home, raising four generations beneath the shade of heritage trees and among gardens that have witnessed countless family celebrations.
Today, the ranch remains family-owned and operated, its agricultural roots still very much part of Ventura County’s landscape.
From Ireland to Ventura County
The story begins with Thomas McCormick, who emigrated from Ireland to New York in 1886. Two years later, he made his way west, eventually arriving in Ventura County in 1888. He worked as a ranch manager for some of the area’s larger landowners, learning the rhythms of Southern California agriculture and establishing himself as a successful businessman.
Thomas eventually married Elizabeth McGrath, the daughter of one of his clients. Together they began raising a family and developing a ranch of their own—the property that would become known as the Home Ranch.
It was a time when Ventura County was still very much a place of working ranches, orchards and open agricultural land. The McCormick family became part of that evolving agricultural landscape, building not only a home but a legacy that would span generations.
A House With a Story
At the heart of the property stands the beautiful Colonial-style home completed in 1918.
Thomas McCormick commissioned prominent Southern California architect Albert C. Martin Sr. to design the house. Martin would go on to become one of the region’s best-known architects, associated with important Southern California landmarks including the Million Dollar Theatre, the Ventura County Courthouse and Los Angeles City Hall.
But at McCormick Home Ranch, his work takes on a distinctly personal character.
Rather than a civic monument, this was a family home—a place inspired by Thomas McCormick’s experiences working on estates and ranches throughout the country. The resulting white Colonial-style house, with its broad veranda and dormer windows, feels both elegant and comfortable, as though it was designed not simply to be admired, but to be lived in.
Since 1918, generations of McCormicks have continued to raise their families here.

A Ranch That Still Feels Like Home
There is a particular magic to historic agricultural properties.
They carry the marks of the people who came before us—the old trees, the gardens, the buildings and the fields. But when those places continue to be cared for and used, they don’t become frozen in time.
They continue to live.
McCormick Home Ranch is one of those Ventura County places where history, agriculture and family remain intertwined. The avocado trees still grow. The gardens still bloom. The old house still welcomes people through its doors.
And somewhere beneath the shade of those heritage trees, you can almost imagine Thomas McCormick arriving in Ventura County more than a century ago, looking across the farmland and imagining a place he could finally call his own.
That vision became a home.
Four generations later, it is still here. And it is still welcoming people through its gates.
